An Australian public pension fund has brought on a hedge fund manager to run its asset allocation and currency investments.

Edwin Schultz has been named an investment strategist and Western Australia’s Government Employees Superannuation Board.  The South African native has spent the past decade at Coronation Fund Managers, where he was co-head of its absolute return division. He also established and ran a multi-strategy hedge fund in South Africa for Coronation.

Prior to joining Cape Town-based Coronation, Schultz co-founded Capital Alliance Asset Managers, where he was chief strategist.

“The market environment will continue to be challenging and unstable, despite the end of the [global financial crisis], and we are building a team that can continue to meet these challenges and contribute to the delivery of sound investment returns over the long term for our 315,000 members,” Sharon Hicks, chief investment officer of the GESB, said.
