Cohen Named Top Art Collector As Manet Auction Underwhelms

Jun 23 2010 | 1:15pm ET

SAC Capital Advisors founder Steven Cohen is one of the 10 most active art collectors in the world, according ARTNews’ annual survey.

Cohen’s inclusion on the list comes after he and his wife, Alexandra, suffered something of a disappointment in London yesterday, as a rare Édouard Manet self-portrait owned by the couple sold for its low estimate. While the painting—one of only two Manet self-portraits—set a record at auction for a Manet canvas at £22.4 million (US$33.2 million), Sotheby’s had hoped that the painting could go for more than US$40 million.

The painting went to New York gallery owner Franck Giraud, who submitted the only bid.

In addition to the Cohens, only one other alternative investment tycoon made the ARTNews list: Apollo Management founder Leon Black. The top 10 were not ranked.
