Jul 8 2010 | 12:09pm ET

The Blackstone Group is getting a new top lawyer. John Finley will join the private equity giant in September as its new chief legal officer, the New York-based firm announced.

Finley will succeed the retiring Robert Friedman. Friedman will remain with the firm for an unspecified period of time before leaving to collect his pension.

“John is one of the most outstanding corporate lawyers of his generation and we are delighted that he has decided to join us at Blackstone,” CEO Stephen Schwarzman said. “His depth of experience, his leadership skills and his reputation for creativity and superb judgment will be invaluable to us as our business continues to expand across both product lines and geographies.”

Finley joins from law firm Simpson Thatcher & Bartlett, where he heads the mergers and acquisitions practice. He’ll serve as a senior managing director at Blackstone, and will join its executive committee.
