UCITS hedge fund funds were the talk of the town in 2010, but the so-called safe fund structure failed to deliver decent returns last year, and their fund of fund counterparts fared even worse, according to one set of indices.
In December, the UCITS Alternative Index Global rose 1.07% bringing the 2010 performance to 1.86%. During December, the Fund of Funds Index gained 0.60% bringing the 2010 performance to -0.14%.
The Commodities Index and the CTA Index achieved the best performance in December with 2.73% and 2.66%, respectively. The FX Index and Fixed Income Index are the worst performing ones with -0.08% and 0.16%, respectively.
In 2010 the Event Driven Index was the best performer with 4.47% followed by the Fixed Income Index and Emerging Market Index with 4.15% and 3.27%, respectively. On the other end of the spectrum, the Commodities Index shows the lowest return for the year with -2.10%.

The UCITS Alternative Index aims to track the performance of UCITS III hedge funds and funds of hedge funds. The inception date of the UCITS Alternative Index Global and the Sub-Indices is Jan. 1, 2008. As of the end of December 2010, the UCITS Alternative Index was made of more than 630 constituent hedge funds and fund of hedge funds, totaling €95 billion assets under management.
