Hedgie Hovde Eyes Senate Seat

Dec 6 2011 | 11:09am ET

A hedge fund manager in Wisconsin is considering his first stab at political office.

Eric Hovde may jump into an already-crowded field seeking the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate. Among Hovde's opponents in that race is former Wisconsin governor and U.S. health and human services secretary Tommy Thompson, former Rep. Mark Neumann, Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald and state Sen. Frank Lasee.

Hovde is the founder, president and CEO of Washington, D.C.-based hedge fund Hovde Capital Advisors and of Hovde Private Equity Advisors. While his firms are based in the nation's capital, Hovde himself lives in Wisconsin's capital, Madison.

Hovde has said he'll make a decision on the race, for the seat of retiring Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.), by the end of the year.
