Hong Kong Hedgies See Big Pay Bump

Dec 19 2011 | 1:11pm ET

Hedgies who want a bigger pay boost should look to Hong Kong, a new survey shows.

The average basic salary for hedge fund staffers and bankers in Hong Kong is up 15% this year, the Astbury Marsden poll shows. The average Hong Kong financial-services pro earned HK$890,000 (US$114,000) this year.

Even better were those who switched jobs. Managing directors jumping from one firm to another in Hong Kong saw their average pay jump 25% to HK$2.5 million, the survey shows, while analysts who switched jobs enjoyed a 20% average pay hike to HK$400,000.

Those who didn't switch jobs and didn't get a promotion will have to settle for a 9.5% increase.

By way of contrast to Hong Kong's 15% pay jump, hedgies and bankers in London have received only a 12% raise, Astbury Marsden said.
