Vinik Adds Nuveen Star

Mar 14 2012 | 12:17pm ET

Vinik Asset Management has hired a top mutual fund manager from Nuveen Investments.

David Iben will join Boston-based Vinik in June, Nuveen said. At Nuveen, Iben headed its Tradewinds affiliate, managing a pair of stock funds with more than $5 billion in assets under management.

Iben's funds have returned 8.1% and 6.9% annualized over the last five years.

At Tradewinds, Iben will be succeeded by co-chief investment officers Emily Alejos and Andrew Thelen.

Like Iben, Vinik founder Jeffrey Vinik got his start in mutual funds, leading Fidelity Investments' largest fund for four years before starting the hedge fund in 1996.
