Stephen Luparello has been named head of the Securities and Exchange Commission's division of trading and markets.
Luparello is a former executive at the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority and also formerly worked at the SEC and Commodity Futures Trading Commission. He is currently a partner at law firm Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale & Dorr.
A formal announcement of Luparello's appointment may not come for several weeks.
Luparello will succeed John Ramsay, who had been acting head of the division since 2012. The unit oversees trading firms, brokerages and stock exchanges.
