Hedge Funds Generate Mixed Returns In March

Hedge fund returns were mixed in March, according to a set of industry beta indexes.

Three of the six Market Vectors Hedge Fund Beta Indexes ended the month in the black and three in the red.

Emerging markets long/short equity funds were the best performers last month, adding 0.77% (but down 0.75% on the quarter). Global long/short equity funds returned 0.41% in March (12.64% on the quarter) and global event long/short equity funds added 0.21% (up 7.29% on the quarter).

On the other side of the ledger, Western Europe long/short equity funds shed 0.87% in March (and are down 0.75% on the quarter). North American long/short equity funds were down 0.50% on the month (but up 16.35% on the quarter) and Developed Asia long/short equity funds were down 0.15% (but up 6.65% on the quarter).

The MVIS indices use exchange-traded fund to replicate hedge fund industry returns.
