Times may be tough for hedge fund managers, but you wouldn’t know if from a glance at Forbes magazine’s annual ranking of the richest Americans.

More than one-sixth of the members of the Forbes 400 have ties to the alternative investments industry. And they are once again led by Carl Icahn, whose fortune grew by another 27% to $25.9 billion over the past year, good enough for 16th place on a list once again headlined by Microsoft Corp. founder Bill Gates, with $81.2 billion.

Fully 18 of the richest 100 Americans stem from the hedge fund and private equity communities. George Soros narrowly trails Icahn in 17th place with $24 billion, followed by Michael Dell at $17.5 billion, Bridgewater Associates’ Ray Dalio at $15.2 billion, MacAndrews & Forbes’ Ronald Perelman at $14.4 billion, John Paulson at $13.7 billion, Renaissance Technologies’ James Simons at $12.5 billion, Blackstone Group’s Stephen Schwarzman at $10.5 billion, Steven Cohen at $10 billion and Appaloosa Management’s David Tepper at $10 billion.

Two new hedgies made the cut this year: Glenview Capital Management’s Larry Robbins enters in 374th place with $1.71 billion and Pershing Square Capital Management’s William Ackman comes in at 377th place with $1.69 billion. In addition, Blackstone real-estate chief Jonathan Gray makes his maiden appearance in 392nd place with $1.59 billion.

John Henry continues to make his relationship with the Forbes 400 and on-again, off-again one: After returning to the list last year, the Boston Red Sox owner fell off it again this year.
