Five Activist Hedge Fund Battles To Watch In 2015

Bill Ackman vs. Zoetis Inc. (NYSE: ZTS)

Bill Ackman’s public battle against Herbalife Ltd. (NYSE: HLF) will rage on well into 2015.

But with the company currently under investigation from the Federal Trade Commission and the Securities Exchange Commission, the only drum left to beat is with the company’s customers. Ackman has said he will take his case to the Latino community, which he believes to be a regular target of Herbalife’s alleged illicit marketing practices.

Ackman also appears to be changing his strategy. Last week, he told CNBC he will no longer short public companies. His firm will also likely disclose a new long position when it files its next quarterly 13F.

That leaves unfinished business between the hedge fund titan and animal-health firm Zoetis Inc. (NYSE: ZTS). In a letter to Pershing shareholders in December, Ackman outlined why his company recently built a large stake in the company alongside his former protégé Scott Ferguson and Sachem Head Capital.

Zoetis is an animal-health company and a spinoff from pharma giant Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE).

Due to its unique position in the market, Ackman called Zoetis a “scarce asset.”

It’s likely that Ackman will push the company to sell itself to another pharmaceutical company.
