BlackRock has announced the appointment of Marcia Moffat as head of its Canadian business. She will join the company this September, bringing more than 15 years of industry experience to the role.

Moffat brings a diverse set of experiences in Canadian financial services to BlackRock, according to a company statement. Through her 12-year career with the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), she held roles in three distinct and diverse areas: Retail Banking, Investor Relations and Capital Markets. In her last role at RBC, Marcia led the company's single largest business line, which was in its retail banking division.

This followed her previous role leading RBC's overall strategy for interactions with shareholders, research analysts and rating agencies, as head of its investor relations team. Her initial start with the bank was as an investment banker in its capital markets division.

Moffat began her career as a corporate lawyer in the New York and Paris offices of Shearman & Sterling.

She was most recently founder and principal at Compasar Solutions, a management consulting firm delivering insights and advice to companies and their management teams in the financial services industry, including those in the asset and wealth management segment. She is currently a Board Member of Manulife Bank of Canada and Manulife Trust Company.

"Marcia brings an exceptional blend of leadership experiences to our Canadian business," said Robert Fairbairn, senior managing director at BlackRock. "We see incredible opportunity to expand our footprint in Canada and, with Marcia's insights and knowledge, she is ideally placed to represent the firm's capabilities across our diverse set of clients."

"We believe that in the evolving regulatory environment, her deep roots in the Canadian retail sector of the financial services industry positions her, and the firm, well for the next leg of growth in Canada," added Fairbairn.

"I am honored to lead BlackRock in Canada," said Moffat. "I look forward to helping take the business to the next level and to building on the many successes BlackRock has achieved to date in this marketplace.

"My focus will be on working closely with the Canadian business and investment community to expand BlackRock's position and reputation as a leading asset manager in this country," she siad.

Moffat’s appointment follows the departure of Noel Archard, who previously held the role.

BlackRock is one of the largest investment managers in the world, with institutional and retail assets under management of $4.721 trillion.
