British Hedge Fund Manager Gorton Cleared of Assault Charges

A British hedge fund manager has been cleared of charges he assaulted his estranged wife on Christmas Day last year.

David Gorton, co-founder and CIO of London Diversified Fund Management, claimed his wife, Yalda, invented the allegations that he grabbed her hair and pushed her against a wall at their home during an argument. Gorton claimed the plot was in order to extract as much money as possible from the couple’s divorce proceedings.

District Judge Richard Baker acquitted Gorton of two counts of assault after saying he could not be sure he had acted as his former spouse had claimed, noting that the only evidence of the Christmas Day assault came from Gorton’s wife herself.

Gorton co-founded London Diversified Fund Management in 2002. He began his career at Chemical Bank in 1986 and worked for HSBC, where he rose to become executive VP and chief dealer in the U.S., and JP Morgan Chase. In 2010, LDFM and Brevan Howard created a joint venture to trade systematic strategies.
