Multi-strategy hedge fund manager Deimos Asset Management has hired former REF Advisors portfolio manager Richard Franzen as a managing director and portfolio manager.

At Deimos, Franzen will focus on managing a pairs-based trading strategy. He is the fifth portfolio manager to join Deimos since last July, following the additions of Paul Orwicz, James Warner, Charles Slotnik and the Brasidas team of Jon Withaar and Steve Deitch.

Prior to Deimos, Franzen managed portfolios based on the same strategy at REF Advisors LLC and at Battenkill Capital Management Inc. since 2007. Beforehand, he was an analyst and portfolio manager at Merrill Lynch Investment Managers from 1996 to 2005, and as an analyst at Millennium Management LLC in 2006.

Formed in January 2015 through a management buyout of Guggenheim Global Trading, Purchase, NY-based Deimos is a multi-manager global hedge fund manager whose portfolio management groups invest under a variety of fundamental and quantitative strategies. Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan is an anchor investor in Deimos’ multi-strategy product through a managed account platform, and leading global alternative asset manager Ares Management has made a strategic investment in the firm.
