Citadel managing director Todd Barker has been named head of the company’s Surveyor Capital unit.

Barker’s appointment replaces Jon Venetos in the role. Venetos will leave the firm, according to a Pensions & Investment article citing a Citadel spokesperson.

In his new role, Barker will oversee the Surveyor team in New York. Before taking on the Surveyor role, he was co-head of Citadel's global equity business in San Francisco.

Surveyor is one of two equity teams within Citadel, and is composed of experienced managers who run their own teams with support and backing from the firm. As a global equity, long/short multi-manager strategy, the group’s portfolio managers use a fundamental, bottom-up research process, primary due diligence, and intensive modeling to construct portfolios that focus on alpha generation while remaining beta-neutral, according to Citadel.

The division’s portfolios are typically focused on one of seven industry sector groups: Communications, Media and Entertainment; Consumer; Energy and Utilities; Financials; Healthcare; Industrials; and Technology.

Chicago-based Citadel was founded by Ken Griffin with $4.6 million and subsequently built it into a global alternative investment powerhouse that manages more than $25 billion in assets.
