Warburg Pincus has named former Alberta premier Jim Prentice an industry advisor in its energy group.

Prentice will work with Warburg Pincus to identify and evaluate investment opportunities in Canada, with a focus on energy investments, according to a statement. He was most recently the 16th premier of Canadian province Alberta and leader of its Progressive Conservative Party.

Prentice brings nearly four decades of experience working in politics and across industry sectors in Canada.  An outspoken supporter of the Canadian energy industry and of the development of Alberta’s numerous energy projects, he has cultivated relationships with major players in the financial community, and was vice-chair and senior executive vice president of CIBC from 2010 to 2014.

“We are pleased to welcome Jim as an industry advisor in our Energy Group,” said David Krieger, managing director of Warburg Pincus. “Jim has deep roots in Canada and his perspective and significant experience will be valuable as we continue to identify attractive investments, particularly in the energy sector and more broadly across the firm’s efforts in Canada.”

Founded in 1966, New York-based Warburg Pincus is private equity firm with more than $40 billion in assets under management in an active portfolio of more than 120 investments. Since inception, Warburg Pincus has raised 15 private equity funds, which have invested more than $50 billion in over 750 companies in more than 40 countries. Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner serves as the company’s president.
