Allen and Overy Adds Five-Partner Leveraged Finance Team

Allen & Overy has recruited a five-person large-cap leveraged finance team from three separate law firms as expectations of rising interest rates and the continued fallout of the Brexit drive activity in the sector.

Collectively, the team has worked on some of the largest private equity financings in recent years, including cross-border acquisitions, according to the company. The team is led by senior partner Scott Zemser, who joins Allen & Overy from White & Case, along with partners Alan Rockwell and Judah Frogel. In addition, Rajani Gupta joins from Proskauer and Todd Koretzky arrives from Milbank.

Zemser becomes co-head of A&O’s leveraged finance group globally, the company said. The team will operate out of New York.

The group’s clients have included major banks and institutions providing large financings used for bridge loans, acquisition loans, debtor-in-possession financings, high-yield and other corporate debt offerings, and asset securitizations, and their clients have included key industry players such as Bank of America, BNP Paribas, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, and JP Morgan.

“The U.S. and European leveraged finance markets have changed significantly over the past few years,” said Philip Bowden, A&O’s global co-head of banking, in a statement. “They are no longer completely independent markets with separate pools of liquidity, but are increasingly used to finance both domestic transactions and deals outside of their home market. The addition of this highly experienced team of U.S. lawyers greatly enhances our ability to support clients globally, regardless of the type of law or place of origin of their financing transactions.”

The new U.S. partners join A&O’s existing New York banking practice and global platform of more than 250 finance partners across the U.S., EMEA and Asia Pacific, the company said.

Founded in 1931, New York-based A&O advised on more than 1,500 deals globally in 2015 from its 44 offices in 31 nations.
