Global investment management firm Schroders PLC has recruited former Morgan Stanley executive Huw van Steenis to be its global head of strategy.

Van Steenis will be responsible for business strategy and corporate development, Schroders said in a statement, and will sit on the company’s group management committee. He will be based in London and report into group CEO Peter Harrison. The position is new and van Steenis will start in the fourth quarter.

Van Steenis was with Morgan Stanley for 14 years, where he was most recently global coordinator of banks and diversified financials research. Beforehand, he held positions with JPMorgan and Boston Consulting Group.

"Huw joins Schroders at a pivotal time for the industry,” said Harrison in a statement. “As a creative thinker and influential collaborator, his deep knowledge and experience of the investment industry is a valuable asset in these times of rapid change.

“Our highly-diversified business model and strong financial position gives us a firm foundation on which to grow,” he added. “We see many interesting long-term opportunities and will be taking advantage of our position to invest behind them.”

The move comes as Schroders makes a concerted effort to strengthen its team, hiring among its European equity and credit teams and teaming with well-known managers to launch new liquid alternative products on its GAIA UCITS platform. Meanwhile, van Steenis’ departure from Morgan Stanley is the latest in an long line of senior investment banking professionals to flee an onslaught of post-crisis regulations and restrictions for the greener pastures of asset management.

“Huw joins Schroders at a pivotal time for the industry,” Schroders Chief Executive Officer Peter Harrison said in the statement. “His deep knowledge and experience of the investment industry is a valuable asset in these times of rapid change. We see many interesting long-term opportunities and will be taking advantage of our position to invest behind them.”

London-based Schroders is a global asset management company with more than $459 billion in assets under management for major financial institutions, pension funds, governments, charities, high net worth individuals and retail investors, invested into a broad range of active strategies across equities, fixed income, multi-asset, alternatives and real estate.
