Just days after striking out on its own, Capital Z Asset Management has lured a top California Public Employees’ Retirement System executive to lead it.

Christianna Wood, senior investment officer for global equity at CalPERS, will join New York-based Capital Z on March 17 as CEO.

“Christy helped CalPERS pioneer many new investments and oversaw over $150 billion of assets dedicated to global equities as well as many of the pension groups’ hedge fund allocations,” Laurence Cheng, chairman of Capital Z, said. “We are extremely pleased that Christy has decided to join Capital Z Asset Management. Her achievements, experience and knowledge of hedge funds will be instrumental in taking CZAM to the next level.”

CZAM, the hedge-fund management arm of Capital Z Investment Partners, was spun-off from its parent company last week, in a buyout led by management and private equity firm Paine & Partners.

In addition to the appointment of Wood, Elizabeth Flisser has been promoted to president. She has been with Capital Z since 1999, sourcing, evaluating and structuring its sponsorship activities.
