Lombard Odier's asset managment division has expanded its 1798 hedge fund platform through a liftout of AlphaGen Capital’s Volantis investment management team.

The Volantis unit manages more than $1 billion in assets in UK equity long/short and long-only strategies. The team of eight will join Lombard Odier Investment Management's operations in London, manage a niche strategy focused on UK small-caps, and benefit from full access to the firm’s asset management platform.

AlphaGen Capital manages approximately $15 billion in alternatives and is a unit of Henderson Global Investors.

Terms of liftout were not disclosed. Subject to fund board approvals, applicable regulatory consents and requisite investor votes, the transfer is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2017, at which point Lombard Odier IM will become the manager of the alternative funds and sub-manager of the long-only fund currently managed by the Volantis investment management team.

“Attracting this team to Lombard Odier represents an important milestone in broadening our alternatives and uncorrelated solutions platform by establishing complementary capabilities in the UK equity long / short space,” said Jean-Pascal Porcherot, head of 1798 hedge fund strategies at Lombard Odier IM, in a statement. “The team comes to us with a proven investment process, strong track record and extensive network which will underpin growth in existing client relationships and access to new clients.”

“As our business model is increasingly focused on more liquid and scalable strategies, we agreed with Volantis that moving to Lombard Odier IM would be in the best interest of investors,” added AlphaGen CEO Paul Graham. “The team will continue to manage their funds in the same manner and style that has brought them great success since inception over 10 years ago.  We retain a good working relationship with the team, not least as they will continue to manage our long-only fund on a delegated basis, and wish them all the best.”

Headquartered in Geneva and founded more than 220 years ago, Lombard Odier is a leading global wealth and asset manager. The firm as a whole managed Sfr. 223 billion as of September 30, 2016, while its Lombard Odier Investment Managers unit manages approximately $4.2 billion in alternative investments.
