Global private equity manager Adams Street Partners has appointed Nuveen non-executive chairman John Amboian to its board of directors.

The appointment is effective March 2017, according to the company. Amboian will replace long-serving director A. Bart Holaday, who is retiring.

Amboian has more than three decades of experience across the financial and consumer industries. He is currently non-executive chairman of Nuveen Investments and previously held the position of chairman and CEO from 2007 through early 2016. Amboian joined Nuveen in 1995 and served as the CFO until 1999, when he was appointed the firm’s president.

Prior to joining Nuveen, Amboian held key business and financial positions in the beverage and food businesses, including senior vice president of finance, strategic planning and systems and CFO of Miller Brewing Company. He began his career in corporate and international finance at Kraft Foods, where he ultimately served as Treasurer.

“With over three decades of experience across the financial and consumer industries, we believe John will add an important perspective to our Board of Directors,” said Bon French, executive chairman of Adams Street, in a statement.  “We are proud to welcome such a distinguished global business leader to our organization, and look forward to benefitting from his guidance and counsel.”

Adams Street Partners commenced its first investment program in 1972, and is credited with establishing the first private equity fund of funds for institutional investors. The firm currently has approximately $28 billion of assets under management across the primary, secondary, venture/growth, private credit and co-investment markets.
