Standard Life Investments Taps Gilshan For ESG Role

Global investment manager Standard Life Investments has strengthened its ESG investment team with addition of Deborah Gilshan as the company’s governance & stewardship director.  

In her new role, Gilshan will play an important role in the implementation of governance and stewardship considerations into the wider mainstream investment process, the company said in a statement. She will actively engage with companies, their boards and regulators on governance issues. Gilshan will reporting to Euan Stirling, head of stewardship & ESG investment, and begin in May 2017.

Gilshan joins from U.K. railways pension fund RPMI Railpen, where she was most recently head of sustainable ownership and leads efforts on active ownership and sustainable investment strategies. She is a member of the Steering Committee of the 30% Club, a global initiative to promote diversity, and co-chairs its institutional investor group in the UK. She is a fellow of ICSA is holds the CFA Investment Management Certificate. 

“We are delighted Deborah will join our ESG Investment team,” said Stirling in the statement. “The consideration of environmental, social and governance issues is now formally integrated as part of our investment research process.”

“As active investment managers, engagement continues to be at the heart of our approach to ESG matters and it is important for us to influence the standards of governance that apply,” Stirling added. “With her depth of knowledge and experience, Deborah will be a terrific addition to the team and invaluable in helping us to hold boards to account.”

Gilshan’s appointment comes six months after the hiring of Marc Brammer and Sophie Ramm to Standard Life Investments’ ESG team.  

Established as a separate company in 1998, Standard Life Investments is an investment firm headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland with around $360 billion in managed assets as of June 30, 2016. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Britain’s Standard Life Plc.
