Hedge funds carried the momentum from 2015’s fourth quarter into the first month of the new year, according to new data from administrator SS&C GlobeOp, while asset flows advanced.

The company’s bellwether SS&C GlobeOp Hedge Fund Performance Index gained a solid +1.71% in January, the third consecutive month in the green following December’s +1.29% and November’s +1.53%.

SS&C GlobeOp’s asset-weighted index flashes a monthly estimate of the gross aggregate performance of funds for which SS&C GlobeOp provides monthly administration services on its platform.

Meanwhile, the February reading of SS&C GlobeOp’s Capital Movement Index, which measures hedge fund flows, was up +0.45% following a seasonally-impacted -3.05% drop in January.

Similar to its performance-focused counterpart, the index tracks monthly net hedge fund subscriptions and redemptions administered by SS&C GlobeOp on the company’s platform, divided by the total assets under administration.

"SS&C GlobeOp's Capital Movement Index for February 2017 of +0.45% reflects an increase in capital allocated to hedge funds, although at a slightly lower rate than the 0.59% increase reported in February 2016," said Bill Stone, chairman and CEO of SS&C Technologies, in a statement. "Outflows actually decreased in the year-over-year comparison, but this was offset by lower inflows.

“Overall, we are seeing fairly subdued activity in our indices, even as stock and bond markets have diverged significantly,” Stone continued. “This suggests investors remain very confident hedge funds are well-suited to take advantage of changing markets, including asset class rotation."

Total assets under administration on the SS&C GlobeOp platform represent approximately 10% of the estimated assets currently invested in the hedge fund sector. Founded in 1986, the Windsor, CT-based firm provides investment and financial software-enabled services and software focused exclusively on the global financial services industry, providing services to more than 10,000 financial services organizations managing an aggregate $44 trillion in assets.
