The hiring of fundraising and marketing professionals in the alternative asset management industry increased by 20% last year, according to new data from industry executive search company and corporate advisor Context Jensen Partners.

For the full year, there were 819 personnel moves, up from 681 moves in 2015, the company said in a statement. The findings were published in Context Jensen’s Q4 2016 newsletter, which provides data and insights on the current fundraising environment for alternative investment managers, including hedge funds, private equity firms, real estate managers and third-party marketing firms.

Of the total marketing activity in 2016, hedge funds accounted for nearly 50% of all hires tracked in the last 12 months, the company added. Demand for marketing and capital raising talent in private equity and real estate grew the most year-over-year, up 71.4% and 239.3% respectively, while geographically, the U.S. continued to outpace the UK.

Other Industry Highlights From The Fourth Quarter:

  • There were 188 total marketing moves in Q4 2016 across all alternatives, a modest decrease from 224 moves in Q4 2015
  • Hedge Funds were once again the most active in hiring marketers, accounting for more than double the number of Q4 marketing moves in any other sector
  • Since Q1 2016, UK hiring has slowed noticeably with 92 total marketing hires over the last two quarters of 2016.

Hedge Fund Highlights:

  • Hedge funds enjoyed another strong quarter with 91 hires, finishing the year with 358 total marketing moves.
  • Over the course of 2016, equity, (+35.3%), fund of funds (+33.3%) and credit (+15.0%) experienced the most growth compared to 2015. Conversely, CTAs (-23.5%), event driven (-14.3) and multi-strat (-3.7%) funds fell in popularity.
  • Credit and equity strategies enjoyed a particularly strong Q4, with 39 and 44 marketing moves, respectively.
  • Looking forward, Context Jensen expects hiring demand in equity and credit strategies to lead the way again in 2017, with an emphasis on funds that employ quantitative-focused strategies.

Private Equity Highlights:

  • Private equity continued to attract talent and gather assets with 44 hires in Q4 2016.
  • Throughout 2016 there were 216 private equity hires tracked, nearly double the 126 marketing hires in 2015 and a quarter-over-quarter increase of more than 71 percent
  • Many of these hires were focused on private market strategies, which are increasingly in demand among allocators.

Real Estate Highlights:

  • Demand for real estate marketers almost tripled in 2016, with 95 hires over the course of the year compared to just 28 in 2015.

Third-Party Marketing Highlights:

  • Third-party marketers, which include placement agents, enjoyed another strong quarter with 36 marketing moves, up from 33 moves in Q4 2015 but down slightly from 41 moves in Q3 2016.
