Global alternative investment manager Hamilton Lane has promoted Lydia Gavalis to the role of general counsel and named Frederick Shaw as chief compliance officer.

Both promotions are effective April 1, according to a company statement. The company’s current general counsel, Robert Cleveland, will retire at that time after 16 years in the role.

Gavalis was previously deputy general counsel, a role she assumed in August 2016 after serving as general counsel for SEI’s institutional investors business segment. She will be responsible for all of the company’s legal affairs globally.

Shaw, who becomes chief compliance officer as part of the transition, will report to Gavalis. He came aboard Hamilton Lane in 2011 as director of compliance, and was previously CCO of Natsource, LLC. He served in various compliance and supervisory positions at Bear Stearns Asset Management, JP Morgan Private Bank, UBS and Smith Barney earlier in his career.

“While we will miss having Bob as part of the Hamilton Lane team, we are confident that we will continue to be well positioned to manage the legal and compliance functions under the sound guidance of Lydia and Fred,” said Mario Giannini, CEO of Hamilton Lane.

Founded in 1991 and headquartered in Bala Cynwyd, PA, Hamilton Lane is an independent alternative investment management firm providing private markets solutions to sophisticated investors worldwide. It has more than $332 billion in total assets under management and supervision deployed across a range of private market strategies.
