Mick McGuire’s Marcato Capital Management and Barry Rosenstein's JANA Partners, two of the best-known activist hedge funds, posted gains in April as they engage in high-profile campaigns against Buffalo Wild Wings and Whole Foods, respectively.

Marcato’s flagship fund reportedly gained 3% in April, according to a Reuters article citing an investor update, leaving it up 6% so far this year. Its Encore International fund rose 4.1% for the month and sits up 7.9% YTD, Reuters added.

Meanwhile, the main fund at JANA Partners rose 0.9% in April and has gained 5.3% so far this year.

In contrast, the average hedge fund has gained just over 2% so far this year, according to Hedge Fund Research, while the S&P 500 Index has risen 7.2%.

Marcato, which owns more than 6% of Buffalo Wild Wings, is pushing for the ouster of longtime CEO Sally Smith in addition to a range of operational changes, while JANA is looking to similarly shake up the board and senior management at high-end grocer Whole Foods.
