Former Harvard Management Company executive Sanjiv Bhatia has teamed with boutique hedge fund incubator Bennbridge to launch a new long/short emerging markets equity fund.
The new company will be named Pembroke, according to an article in InvestmentWeek, and will reportedly launch to external investors in the first quarter of next year.
Bhatia has considerable experience investing in emerging markets, building the Asian business for Deephaven Capital Management before spending 12 years at Goldman Sachs as head of Asian equity trading in Hong Kong. He joined HMC in 2012 and managed the endowment’s emerging market portfolios from 2013 to earlier this year.
Pembroke will reportedly focus on high-conviction equity opportunities identified via s combination of macro-level themes and company-specific fundamental analysis, the article said, and will carry low net exposures. It will be London-based BennBridge’s second launch since forming Tellworth Investments with former Schroders executives Paul Marriage and John Warren in June.
"We believe it is the optimal time in the emerging markets equity cycle to launch a specialist emerging market boutique,” said Ryan Durance, head of business development at BennBridge, in a statement. “We continue to see robust client demand globally and expect the asset class will continue to provide a consistent source of alpha for skilled managers over the long term.”
Founded in 2016 and led by Greg Thomas, BennBridge is a unit of Australian venture capital firm Bennelong Funds. The company partners with boutique fund managers to assist with distribution, operations and infrastructure support.
