Description: The Goal of the Associate, Investments is to manage the design, development, testing and implementation of systems for portfolio risk allocation and monitoring, external manager analysis and monitoring, data collection and performance measurement. The Associate will interface with each of the constituencies within the investment department, including portfolio management, manager research, operational risk and the Investment Committee. Additionally, the Associate will interface extensively with Tremont’s technology team as well as third party software vendors.

Key Responsibilities:

Responsible for designing, developing, testing and implementing system solutions that meet the requirements of the Chief Investment Officer and portfolio managers as risk allocators, as well as the requirements of manager research staff:

Conduct research jointly with other risk/quant staff to develop and enhance our risk, return and performance measurement models. Based on the results, build or enhance software systems and processes, working with the Tremont technology team and external vendors as necessary.

Work with the CIO and Managing Director to develop performance metrics for manager selection and portfolio management.

Create functional specifications for both internal and external risk software development and guide the prioritization of development projects.

Oversee continued enhancement of batch and ad hoc reporting from the firm’s third-party and in-house risk systems.

Assess the analytical capabilities of third party vendors and recommend build vs. buy conclusions. Lead the software development for “build” solutions and the software integration for “buy” solutions.

Manage our relationships with market and hedge fund data providers.
Manage our efforts to collect risk data, including periodic reports from our hedge funds, Tremont analyst estimates, and third party reports such as RiskMetrics and MeasuRisk.

Skills and Attributes:

Advanced software development skills – proven ability to serve as lead/sole developer on complex, technical software projects, and deep understanding of how to write high quality, modular and maintainable code.

Developing and enhancing Matlab-based systems will be the largest time component for this role – we require 2-3 years advanced experience using Matlab or another vector-based programming language in research or production environments.

Software engineering - a commitment to standard software engineering techniques such as source control, unit testing and functional testing is a must.
Intermediate-level experience with SQL. Extensive knowledge of data sources/feeds such as Bloomberg and Datastream.

Strong technical communication skills, particularly the ability to translate between the technology team and business users in the investment department.

Math/statistics skills at an advanced graduate (ideally Ph.D.) level, -- knowledge of stochastic calculus, linear programming, econometrics and time series analysis.

Basic finance skills at the level of a Master’s, CFA or equivalent certification including knowledge of derivatives, portfolio management, and corporate finance.

Education/Experience Requirements:

2-5 years of capital markets or related experience with preference given to candidates with risk management experience in multiple asset classes.

Education:

Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Finance, Economics, Financial Engineering, Statistics or a hard science.
